ABUJA (CHATNEWSTV) — The Federal Government has generated approximately N2.4 billion in 2024 from marriage contracts through the Ministry of Interior’s marriage registry, Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo revealed on Tuesday.
Tunji-Ojo made the disclosure during a media interaction in Abuja, where he also announced that the ministry had earned over N3.2 billion from expatriate quota applications. This led to an overall 150 percent increase in revenue compared to previous years.
The minister attributed the surge in revenue to measures taken to close financial leakages, including the automation of key processes within the ministry. “The increase in our internally generated revenue (IGR) is a result of our efforts to close leakages through zero remittances and fully automated solutions,” Tunji-Ojo explained.
In addition to the financial gains, the ministry also repatriated 828 foreigners to their home countries in 2024, the government confirmed.
Tunji-Ojo’s performance was commended by the National Assembly Joint Committee on Interior, who praised the minister’s work during a budget defense session for the 2025 fiscal year.
He noted that in 2024, the ministry surpassed its target for business expatriate quotas and naturalization, generating N4.5 billion against a N1.2 billion target approved by the National Assembly.
