ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (CHATNEWSTV) — The African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat on Tuesday expressed deep dismay over the U.S. government’s announcement to withdraw from the World Health Organization, urging Washington to reconsider its decision.
“For over seven decades, the United States has played a pivotal role in shaping WHO’s global public health security and wellbeing standards,” Faki said in a statement.
He highlighted the critical support the U.S. provided in establishing the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the African Union’s public health emergency agency, which collaborates closely with WHO to address pandemics.
“At a time when the world depends more than ever on WHO’s leadership in safeguarding global health, this decision is deeply concerning,” Faki said.
The U.S., a founding member of WHO, has been instrumental in global health initiatives, particularly in Africa, where its contributions have strengthened pandemic preparedness and response efforts.
Faki called on the U.S. government to reverse course, emphasizing the importance of WHO’s mandate in ensuring global health security as a shared common good.
