Human rights activist and social media influencer, Aisha Yesufu, has rejected the recently re-introduced national anthem, ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’, refusing to stand while it was being sung.
The incident, captured in a trending video on social media, shows Yesufu sitting at an event where others were standing and reciting the new anthem. Her decision to remain seated while others sang left many guests at the event astonished.
Sharing the now-viral video clip on her official X handle, Yesufu tweeted, “Not my anthem.”
ChatNews TV had earlier reported that the National Assembly recently passed the National Anthem Bill 2024, despite reservations expressed by many Nigerians. On Wednesday, May 29, President Bola Tinubu assented to the bill, thereby jettisoning the former anthem, ‘Arise O Compatriot’, which was adopted in 1978.
