BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — António Costa, the incoming president of the European Council, emphasized unity, shared values, and trust as the cornerstones of his agenda during a handover ceremony with outgoing President Charles Michel on Friday.
In his speech, Costa lauded Michel’s leadership through challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic, economic crises, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
“Cher Charles, your tireless efforts and deep commitment to Europe have been indispensable in building European unity during very difficult times,” Costa said.
“Europe owes you much.”
Reflecting on his own journey, Costa expressed pride in serving his city, country, and now the European Union, stating, “Lisbon is my city. Portugal is my country. And Europe is our common home.”
He underscored that in today’s globalized world, patriotism and sovereignty can only be truly safeguarded through a united Europe.
“Only together can we stand up for security, stability, and peace on our continent. Only together can we achieve shared prosperity, economic growth, and the climate transition,” Costa remarked.
Costa highlighted the importance of unity amidst diversity, describing Europe’s varied histories, cultures, and geographic perspectives as a source of strength rather than division.
“Europe’s unity in diversity is remarkable,” he said.
“As President of the European Council, I will make it my mission to build this unity and cherish our natural diversity.”
On the war in Ukraine, Costa underscored Europe’s steadfast support for Kyiv, emphasizing that peace must be just, lasting, and aligned with international law.
“Peace cannot mean the peace of a graveyard. Peace cannot mean capitulation,” he said, calling for a stronger and more autonomous Europe in terms of security and defense.
He also called for faster action on EU enlargement, particularly with the Western Balkans and Eastern neighbors, describing it as a “geopolitical imperative.”
Costa’s vision extended beyond Europe, advocating for a more inclusive global approach. “We should abandon concepts such as ‘Global South’ or ‘Global North.’ Both the South and the North are, in fact, plural,” he noted, urging for a multilateral global governance framework.
The incoming president stressed the EU’s role in delivering prosperity to its citizens, emphasizing the need to complete the Single Market, reduce bureaucracy, and invest in skills and innovation.
Concluding his address, Costa highlighted the importance of trust in binding Europe together. “We must renew that link with citizens by addressing their worries — from the housing crisis to climate change, from energy costs to better jobs,” he said.
