The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ordered its members in the state House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This directive comes in the wake of the governor’s recent declaration that the Assembly members “do not exist anymore in the eyes of the law.”
During a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the Chairman of the APC in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha, stated that the impeachment process was crucial as the governor “has insulted the sensibility” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. President Tinubu had previously intervened in an attempt to resolve the ongoing crisis in the state.
It is important to recall that Governor Fubara and the State House of Assembly have been embroiled in a serious disagreement over the passage of the Amended State’s Procurement Bill. This conflict has now escalated to a point where the APC sees no other recourse but to initiate impeachment proceedings against the governor.
The APC’s move signals a significant escalation in the political tension within the state, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the political landscape in Rivers State and the wider region. The coming days will undoubtedly be crucial in determining the future of Governor Fubara’s tenure and the resolution of the ongoing crisis.
