AQABA, Jordan (CHATNEWSTV) — The Arab Contact Group on Syria, joined by representatives from Bahrain, France, Germany, Qatar, Türkiye, the UAE, the UK, the U.S., the European Union, and the UN Special Envoy for Syria, issued a joint statement Sunday reaffirming their commitment to a peaceful and unified Syria.
Meeting on the margins of the Aqaba Joint Contact Group ministerial session, the participants expressed their full support for the Syrian people and called for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned transitional political process. The group emphasized the importance of forming an inclusive, non-sectarian government through a transparent process in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254.
“The international community stands united in supporting Syria’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty while urging respect for human rights, including those of women and minorities,” the statement read.
The group stressed the need to preserve state institutions essential for providing critical services to Syrians and to secure the safe return of internally displaced persons and refugees. They also called for unhindered humanitarian aid access and accountability in determining the fate of missing Syrians and foreign nationals.
Underscoring the importance of combating terrorism, the participants demanded that Syrian territory not harbor terrorist groups or pose a threat to neighboring countries.
“This is a pivotal moment for Syria to emerge from decades of isolation,” the group declared, pledging support for the Syrian people as they embark on what was described as “an unprecedented transition.”
The joint statement also emphasized the need for all parties in Syria to cease hostilities and respect the principles of the UN Charter, ensuring the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to maintaining these principles as a foundation for ongoing international engagement with Syria.
