BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — The European Union and the United States have welcomed the completion of negotiations on a landmark peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, calling it a critical step toward lasting stability in the South Caucasus.
“We commend both sides for their persistent work over the past few years in this direction, both on the bilateral track and with the involvement of the international community,” said EU High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas in a statement Friday. “The announcements represent a decisive step towards lasting peace and security in the region.”
The EU praised Armenia for paving the way toward the finalization of the treaty and urged both nations to maintain momentum. “It is key to keep this momentum and ensure smooth completion of this process with the same forward-looking and compromise-oriented approach from both sides,” Kallas added.
Brussels reaffirmed its commitment to supporting normalization between the two countries and offered additional expertise if requested.
Washington also hailed the agreement as a historic milestone. “This is an opportunity for both countries to turn the page on a decades-old conflict,” said U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “Now is the time to commit to peace, sign and ratify the treaty, and usher in a new era of prosperity for the people of the South Caucasus.”
The breakthrough follows years of diplomatic efforts and intermittent clashes over contested territories. The peace treaty is expected to formally establish interstate relations and end hostilities between the two nations.
Both the EU and the U.S. emphasized the significance of this moment and pledged continued support to ensure a lasting and comprehensive resolution.
