UNITED NATIONS (Chatnewstv.com) — Leaders of the African Union, European Union and United Nations on Sunday urged an immediate end to Sudan’s war and renewed their pledge to strengthen multilateral efforts for peace and development across Africa.
Meeting in New York on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres called multilateralism “the most effective way to address today’s challenges.”
In a joint statement, they condemned “the rising number of instances of lack of respect for international humanitarian law and human rights law” and vowed to intensify support for inclusive dialogue in Sudan. The war, they said, must end through “an immediate cessation of hostilities and a sustainable solution to the conflict.”
The leaders also discussed counterterrorism in the Sahel, support for peace efforts in eastern Congo, and backing for U.N. efforts to revive political talks in Libya. They reaffirmed their commitment to the African Union’s stabilization mission in Somalia and pressed donors to provide sustained funding.
On migration, the three organizations pledged to uphold international humanitarian standards and cited the AU-EU-UN task force on migrants in Libya as a key mechanism. They also welcomed progress on U.N. Security Council resolution 2719, which provides predictable financing for African Union peace support operations.
The statement said the groups remain committed to Africa’s Agenda 2063, the U.N.’s 2030 development goals, and to preparing for a joint AU-EU summit in Luanda, Angola, in November. They also warned of worsening climate impacts on vulnerable populations and urged ambitious action at the COP30 climate talks in Brazil later this year.
Marking the 25th anniversary of U.N. Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security, the organizations pledged to accelerate women’s leadership and participation in peacebuilding.
The AU, EU and U.N. agreed to hold their next trilateral meeting in 2026 during the General Assembly.
