SHANGHAI (CHATNEWSTV) — German automaker Audi launched a bold model offensive Wednesday at Auto Shanghai 2025, unveiling five new vehicles tailored specifically for the Chinese market — a key battleground in the global race for premium electric and combustion mobility.
The debuts include the long-wheelbase Audi A5L, A5L Sportback, Q5L, the all-electric A6L e-tron, and the high-performance AUDI E5 Sportback, the first production model from the new China-only brand AUDI. In total, 19 models are being showcased by Audi and its local partners FAW and SAIC through May 2.
“2025 marks the start of a new era for Audi in China,” said Audi CEO Gernot Döllner at the unveiling. “With our all-new battery-electric and internal-combustion models launched in Shanghai, we will actively shape the growing e-mobility market in China as well as the market for internal-combustion vehicles.”
New Models Emphasize Local Customization
The new A5L and A5L Sportback, both featuring extended wheelbases and next-generation combustion engines with mild-hybrid technology, emphasize comfort, performance, and tech-laden interiors. The Q5L SUV follows suit with a 125mm stretch in wheelbase and a dynamic new design.
Meanwhile, the A6L e-tron — built in Changchun at the Audi FAW NEV Company — introduces China to a luxurious electric sedan offering up to 770 kilometers (478 miles) of range, thanks to an advanced 800-volt platform and a 107 kWh battery.
The spotlight, however, shone brightest on the debut of the AUDI E5 Sportback — a fully electric, high-performance crossover coupe capable of 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. Jointly developed with SAIC, it combines German engineering with China’s digital ecosystem to target younger, tech-savvy premium buyers.
Brand Strategy and Market Focus
Audi executives underscored their dual-brand approach and strong local alliances. “Together with FAW and SAIC, we are proving that one plus one is more than two,” said Johannes Roscheck, President of Audi China. “Our dual-brand strategy accelerates innovation.”
The five debuts also mark a push to localize both electric and combustion portfolios for Chinese customers, complete with digitally immersive cockpits, enhanced driver-assistance systems, and China-specific design elements.
“As a premium brand, we are delivering a product portfolio that will excite and inspire,” added Marco Schubert, Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “Chinese customers have a lot to look forward to.”
With China at the center of its transformation, Audi aims to not just compete but lead in both EV and conventional markets. The new launches set the stage for what the company called its “strongest ever model initiative” in its largest single market.
