LONDON — Conservative Party Leader Kemi Badenoch on Thursday abruptly sacked her chief rival, Robert Jenrick, from the shadow cabinet and suspended his party membership, citing “irrefutable evidence” of a secret plot to defect to a rival party.
The move, which includes the immediate removal of the party whip in Parliament, plunges the Conservatives into fresh turmoil just months after Badenoch defeated Jenrick in a high-profile leadership contest.
‘Political Psychodrama’
In a statement released on social media and followed by a video address, Badenoch said the decision was necessary to end a cycle of internal betrayals.
“I was presented with clear, irrefutable evidence that he was plotting in secret to defect in a way designed to be as damaging as possible to his Shadow Cabinet colleagues and the wider Conservative Party,” Badenoch said. “The British public are tired of political psychodrama and so am I. They saw too much of it in the last government, they’re seeing too much of it in THIS government. I will not repeat those mistakes.”
Conservative sources indicated the “irrefutable evidence” included a draft of a resignation speech and records of clandestine meetings with leadership from the right-wing Reform UK party.
The Reform Connection
While Badenoch did not explicitly name the party Jenrick intended to join, suspicion immediately fell on Reform UK. The party, led by Nigel Farage, has already welcomed high-profile Conservative defectors this year, including former Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi earlier this week.
Speaking at a press conference in Edinburgh on Thursday, Farage confirmed he had been in contact with Jenrick.
“Of course, I’ve talked to Robert Jenrick,” Farage said. “Was I on the verge of signing a document with him? No. But have we had conversations? Yes. I think virtually every Conservative is considering leaving the Conservatives.”
Farage added that he was “very surprised” the news had broken before any official announcement was made.
Internal Fallout
The sacking marks a stunning fall for Jenrick, the former Immigration Minister and Shadow Justice Secretary, who had built a significant following on the party’s right wing. Conservative Party Chair Kevin Hollinrake described Jenrick’s actions as “treacherous,” suggesting they were motivated by “personal ambition” after his leadership loss.
The Liberal Democrats mocked the infighting, with a party spokesperson stating the dismissal “makes ‘The Traitors’ roundtable look united.”
The suspension leaves Jenrick as an independent Member of Parliament, pending further investigation into the evidence presented to the leadership.
