LAGOS, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — Nigerian comedian Bright Okpocha, better known as Basketmouth, has announced that he will fully devote himself to music and filmmaking in 2025, revealing that his comedic career began by chance.
In a recent interview with Pulse, Basketmouth explained that his initial passion was music, but after realizing it wasn’t progressing as he hoped, he shifted to comedy. “I started with music but I saw that it wasn’t going to work. I have always been funny since primary school, but music was just a talent I felt I could use as a plaything,” he said.
Basketmouth described rap as his initial focus, but after it failed to gain traction, he turned to comedy. “It was even by fluke. I was like, ‘this one is working. It must be the one.’”
Looking ahead, Basketmouth is determined to take music and film more seriously. “I’m going to take music more seriously in 2025. I want to create EPs because there are some artists I want to work with,” he said. However, he emphasized that film remains his top priority. “Movies are my first choice. I prioritise movies over comedy. It has always been like that; it’s just that I haven’t made the movie yet.”
Reflecting on his rise in comedy, Basketmouth acknowledged the tough start but credited his breakthrough to persistence. “The beginning was turbulent but immediately I hacked it, my career skyrocketed.”
