BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — Belgium’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to defending the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals, both at home and abroad, as it marked the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on May 17.
“Too often, LGBTQI+ people remain targets of violence, harassment, stigmatisation and disinformation campaigns that fuel hate,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot in a statement. “We call on all states to reject hate speech, discriminatory behaviour and all forms of violence.”
The Federal Public Service (FPS) Foreign Affairs said Belgium would continue to champion LGBTQI+ rights through bilateral diplomacy, multilateral coalitions and global cooperation efforts.
While acknowledging global progress, the ministry decried what it called a “resurgence of discrimination and violence” against LGBTQI+ people, even within Europe. Prévot added that “sexual orientation and gender identity can in no way justify human rights violations.”
As part of its efforts, Belgium plans to support the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity this June.
The ministry also pointed to domestic progress, noting that 95% of the measures outlined in its National Action Plan “For an LGBTQI+ Friendly Belgium” have been implemented or are underway. Belgian embassies and consulates, it said, will continue to support civil society initiatives and serve as safe spaces for LGBTQI+ individuals worldwide.
“Our diplomatic missions will not only participate in advocacy and Pride events but will also collaborate with local authorities to amplify inclusive initiatives,” the statement read.
In Brussels, the FPS will once again take part in the city’s Pride celebrations, with Prévot leading the delegation under the banner “Committed to Diversity and Inclusion.”
The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is observed annually on May 17 to mark the World Health Organization’s 1990 decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. The day promotes awareness and the protection of LGBTQI+ human rights globally.
