Blinken, Kallas Discuss Strengthening U.S.-EU Ties

WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Vice President-Designate, to reinforce the importance of the U.S.-EU partnership in tackling shared international challenges. The meeting took place on Wednesday, with both leaders expressing a commitment to deepen cooperation on key global issues.

According to a statement from State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, Secretary Blinken and High Representative Kallas focused on a range of topics, including the ongoing support for Ukraine in its struggle for freedom and independence against Russia’s aggression.

“The United States and the European Union remain united in our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and its right to defend itself,” Blinken emphasized.

“We will continue to work closely to provide the necessary aid and support to uphold Ukraine’s independence.”

The discussion also covered economic matters, with both leaders agreeing on the need to bolster trade ties and maintain a competitive edge on the global stage.

“The U.S.-EU partnership is key to ensuring that our economic advantages are mutually beneficial, fostering innovation, and creating jobs on both sides of the Atlantic,” Blinken said.

Kallas, who is poised to assume her new role as Vice President, echoed Blinken’s sentiments, highlighting the strength of the transatlantic alliance.

“Our partnership with the United States is crucial, not only for our economies but also for maintaining stability and security in regions facing turmoil,” Kallas said.

Following the meeting, Blinken took to social media to emphasize the importance of the U.S.-EU relationship. “Great opportunity to reengage with High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Vice President-Designate Kallas here in Brussels on issues that matter the most – global peace, security, and stability achieved by a strong transatlantic partnership,” he tweeted.

Both leaders underscored the importance of continued collaboration in conflict zones worldwide, aiming to bring stability to regions plagued by unrest. Blinken and Kallas reiterated their joint commitment to addressing crises in conflict areas, stressing that collective efforts are essential for effective conflict resolution.
