Agency Report –
Frankfurt – Germany’s Bundesliga will introduce semi automated offside technology from next season onwards, refereeing chief Knut Kircher told Monday’s edition of Kicker sports magazine.
The technology is to help make offside decisions much quicker than regular video assistant referee decisions in such situations.
The system is in place in various big leagues and was also used at the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024. It works via cameras in the stadium and a chip in the ball, with the VAR informing the referee about the outcome.
Kircher also said that the Bundesliga is ready to trial a system in which referees announce the result of video reviews in the stadium.
He said they were waiting for more insight from the ruling body FIFA and said that all aspects must function properly, such as the right images being shown on the stadium screen when the referee makes the announcement.
