JOHANNESBURG (CHATNEWSTV) — The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) announced Tuesday a 75% increase in prize money for the winner of the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The winning team will now receive $3.5 million, part of an overall prize pool of $10.4 million, a 32% increase from previous tournaments.
“We are excited about the upcoming CHAN 2024 and have significantly increased the prize money to make the competition more attractive and rewarding,” said CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe. “The CHAN is vital for developing Africa-based players and will enhance the global competitiveness of African football.”
The tournament, scheduled to kick off on February 1, 2025, will feature 17 qualified teams, including hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, as well as Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, and Zambia. Two additional teams will qualify in the coming weeks.
Dr. Motsepe emphasized that the increased prize money aligns with CAF’s broader strategy to invest in African football, boost its appeal to fans and sponsors, and elevate its global profile.
The CHAN tournament, distinct from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), exclusively features players competing in their domestic leagues, providing a platform to showcase local talent.
The final match of the competition is scheduled for February 28, 2025.
