The President of the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, received high praise today, Sunday, 20 October 2024, during meetings with Zonal Unions as part of ongoing discussions around football development across the continent. Member Association Presidents and Zonal Union leaders commended the efforts of the CAF President, particularly highlighting the increased financial support under his leadership.
CAF has significantly raised its financial backing for Zonal Unions and Member Associations, with annual subventions increasing from USD 450,000 to USD 750,000, a notable 50% rise. Similarly, subventions for Member Associations grew from USD 250,000 to USD 400,000, resulting in a surge in football activities.
WAFU B President Kurt Okraku praised Motsepe’s leadership, saying, “We thank President Motsepe for the enormous work he has done since he took over as the President of CAF. We have seen the progress of his vision. As an MA President, we understand the pain of finding even 1 USD. Funding under President Motsepe’s leadership has increased. If you go to our countries, football development activities are happening. And that is no coincidence.”
UNIFFAC President Guy Blaise Mayolas echoed this sentiment, stating, “We thank you, President, for walking with us on this journey. Today, UNIFFAC has a home – this is the first time that UNIFFAC has a home. We thank CAF, we thank the President of CAF.”
Lamin Kaba Bajo, President of WAFU A, emphasized the significance of the financial boost, saying, “The increased financial support from CAF has been invaluable for us at Zonal levels. We thank President Motsepe for his leadership and the tone he has set at CAF.”
Dr. Motsepe underscored the importance of engaging governments and the private sector as partners to further accelerate football growth in Africa. His leadership has been widely credited with rejuvenating the sport and fostering greater collaboration between CAF, its Member Associations, and Zonal Unions.
