Canada Issues Statement Regarding Explosion at Canadian High Commission in Abuja

ABUJA, Nigeria, November 7, 2023/ — Today, a tragic explosion occurred in the generator room at the High Commission of Canada in Abuja, Nigeria. This unfortunate incident claimed the lives of two individuals, including a locally engaged employee, while two others sustained injuries. Global Affairs Canada expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a swift and complete recovery to those who were injured. We can confirm that all other staff members at the High Commission are safe and unhurt.

Our immediate priority is to ensure the safety of the premises, and we will collaborate closely with local authorities to determine the cause of the explosion. While a thorough investigation will be carried out, preliminary information suggests that this was an accidental occurrence rather than a deliberate act.

Canadians seeking consular assistance are encouraged to reach out to Global Affairs Canada’s 24/7 Emergency Watch and Response Centre. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
