China Fights Back, Retaliates With 34% Tariffs On US Imports

China has retaliated against the US tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump with its own set of countermeasures.

The country announced a 34% additional tariff on all US goods, effective April 10, as well as export curbs on some rare earths. This move deepens the escalating trade war between the two nations.

Agriculture trade has also taken a hit, with Chinese customs suspending imports of sorghums from US grain exporter C&D (USA) Inc., as well as poultry and bonemeal from three other US firms.

Beijing has also imposed controls on exports of medium and heavy rare-earths, including samarium, gadolinium, and terbium, to the US, effective April 4.

According to the commerce ministry, “The purpose of the Chinese government’s implementation of export controls on relevant items in accordance with the law is to better safeguard national security and interests, and to fulfil international obligations such as non-proliferation.”

Additionally, 16 US entities have been added to China’s export control list, prohibiting the export of dual-use items to these firms. Another 11 US firms have been added to the “unreliable entities” list, allowing Beijing to take punitive action against them.

Some of the targeted firms include Skydio Inc. and BRINC Drones, which have been accused of undermining China’s national sovereignty and security interests through arms sales to Taiwan.
