ABUJA (ChatnewsTV) – In a major event marking the beginning of the 2024/2025 legal year, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Kudirat Kekere-Ekun will swear in 87 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) on Monday, according to a statement released by the Supreme Court.
Festus Akande, the Director of Information and Public Relations for the Supreme Court, said in the statement that the CJN will also deliver a state-of-the-Judiciary address, reflecting on the performance of the Nigerian judiciary over the past legal year.
“The new legal year ceremony is a significant occasion, setting the tone for the judiciary’s performance in the year ahead. The Chief Justice’s address will provide insight into the challenges and successes of the 2023/2024 legal year,” Akande noted.
The ceremony, scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM in the Supreme Court’s main courtroom, will feature speeches by key figures in Nigeria’s justice sector. Among those expected to deliver remarks are the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the Chairman of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
These leaders will discuss the state of the judiciary and legal profession, providing a roadmap for the upcoming year.
The Supreme Court resumed sittings on September 23, 2024, following its annual vacation, which began on July 22. Traditionally, the legal year ceremony is held to formally mark the judiciary’s return to its full duties.
As Nigeria ushers in a new legal year, the swearing-in of 87 new SANs represents a significant step in enhancing the capacity of the legal system. This prestigious title is conferred on legal practitioners who have shown exceptional advocacy and contributions to the legal profession.
