BerlinĀ – The co-leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is to attend US President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration to a second term on Monday.
Tino Chrupalla told dpa on Thursday that he has received an invitation to attend the ceremony outside the US Capitol building in Washington.
The AfD – which is polling in second place ahead of the German federal election on February 23 – has ties to Trump’s Republican Party.
The incoming president’s adviser Elon Musk recently held a highly publicized live conversation on his platform X with the AfD’s candidate for chancellor, Alice Weidel.
“Attending the inauguration of President Donald Trump shows once again that we are implementing our interest-led policy,” said Chrupalla. “This presidency will change the world forever.”
Chrupalla said he and Weidel, who have led the AfD together since 2019, are ready to become strong European partners for Trump’s administration.
“Germany must maintain good and peaceful relations with all countries,” the lawmaker added.
Weidel is not expected to attend the inauguration due to the German election campaign.
