BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — European Council President António Costa reaffirmed the European Union’s steadfast commitment to Ukraine on Thursday, pledging continued support for the war-torn nation and outlining a vision for Europe’s role in a multipolar world.
Standing alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Brussels, Costa declared, “You can count on our full and unwavering support, whatever it takes and for as long as necessary—now in war, and in future peace.”
Costa emphasized the EU’s ambition to welcome Ukraine as a member state, underscoring that the current conflict is not just a European issue but a global battle for universal principles.
“This war is about the fundamental rights enshrined in the United Nations Charter: self-determination, territorial integrity, and safe borders. International law must prevail, and the invasion must be defeated,” he added.
Ukraine and Beyond
While Ukraine dominated the discussion, Costa highlighted the broader geopolitical context, stressing that Europe must engage with a pluralistic world.
“We are not living in a bipolar world but in a multipolar one,” Costa said. “We must weave strong global networks with partners across continents, from New Zealand to Brazil.”
The Council aims to address pressing global issues, including climate change, oceans governance, sustainable development, and a new international framework for managing debt in less developed countries.
“This is essential for our shared future of peace and prosperity,” Costa said, calling for European leadership on these challenges.
Ukraine’s Membership Aspirations
Zelenskyy thanked the EU for its continued support and reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to achieving peace and securing membership in the bloc.
“Our path to the EU is intertwined with the fight for our sovereignty and democracy,” Zelenskyy said. “We look forward to the day Ukraine joins the European family fully.”
The meeting set the stage for further discussions on Ukraine’s reconstruction and Europe’s global strategy, emphasizing the importance of unity in addressing both regional and international challenges.
