LAGOS (CHATNEWSTV) — Covenant University, Ota, has been ranked as the best private university in Nigeria, with Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) emerging second, according to the 2025 AD Scientific Index.
The ranking, published under the title ‘Africa 450 Private Universities Rankings 2025’, also placed Covenant University as the top private institution in Africa, followed by the American University in Cairo, Morocco’s Mohammed VI Polytechnic, and MAAUN in fourth place.
The AD Scientific Index said its ranking system evaluates universities based on their ability to attract and retain top scientists, as well as their contributions to scientific advancements.
“This feature reveals the ability of institutions to attract successful scientists and the ability of institutions to promote advances and retain scientists,” the report stated.
Reacting to the ranking, Prof. Junaid Amin of the African Centre for Research and Innovation at MAAUN described the recognition as a major milestone for the university.
“It’s high time we did a complete overhaul of the education system globally, employing the best lecturers and equipping our universities with the best facilities,” Amin said.
He attributed MAAUN’s rapid rise to the institution’s commitment to international standards.
“MAAUN achieving this feat in just four years is not surprising. The founder has proved his commitment to excellence. I see a brighter future for the university in the coming years,” he added.
