LAGOS, Nigeria — Afrobeats superstar Davido has sparked a social media firestorm after a 12-year-old girl, Anuoluwapo Mitchelle, publicly appealed for a DNA test to confirm if the singer is her biological father.
The controversy, which has simmered for nearly a decade, reignited Thursday after the teenager shared an open letter on Instagram detailing years of school bullying and mental anguish caused by her unresolved identity. The situation escalated when she released screenshots of an alleged private chat in which the singer reportedly used harsh language to deny her claims.
“As I transition into a young woman, I am respectfully asking Mr. David Adeleke for a DNA test to establish my identity,” Anu wrote in her appeal. “This test is between my dad and I. It is something I want. It is the right thing to do.”
Davido, whose legal name is David Adeleke, responded with a scathing rebuttal on X (formerly Twitter), asserting that the matter had already been settled through extensive medical testing.
“I’ve taken five DNA tests, all negative. I am not your father,” the singer posted. He further clarified that to ensure transparency, he selected three hospitals for the procedures while the girl’s family chose the remaining two. “All came out negative… this is the last time I’m speaking on this nonsense.”
The “Unavailable” hitmaker also accused the girl’s mother, Ayo Labinjoh, of being an “obsessed fan” and suggested she was manipulating her daughter. He claimed he had never met Labinjoh except during the DNA collection processes.
In a follow-up response late Thursday, Labinjoh disputed the singer’s account, alleging irregularities in the past testing processes. She claimed that previous results were compromised and announced her intention to seek independent supervision from international authorities, specifically mentioning the U.S. State Department due to Davido’s American citizenship.
The public exchange has deeply divided online observers. While some fans defended the singer’s right to privacy after multiple tests, others expressed concern for the child’s welfare, urging for a final, independently verified resolution.
Davido has threatened legal action against Labinjoh for what he termed persistent harassment. “The mom needs to go to jail, I don’t blame the poor girl,” he added.
