Agency Report –
Coach Nuri Sahin’s job is not up for discussion despite a shocking defeat to promoted Holstein Kiel as Borussia Dortmund dismissed the possibility of sacking him.
“We will not have a discussion about the coach,” managing director for sport Lars Ricken said after Tuesday’s 4-2 defeat to Kiel.
And according to media reports, the trust those in charge have in Sahin is so great that he could remain in office even if the team keeps distancing themselves from the Champions League places.
Dortmund are currently ninth in the standings, five points from the Champions League qualification zone.
But Ricken said that “generally speaking, we’re not talking about a European competition at the moment. It’s all about winning the next game at Eintracht Frankfurt” on Friday.
Sahin’s days counted?
Former football player and Sky TV pundit Dietmar Hamann, however, believes that Sahin won’t stay too long at the club amid a disappointing season.
A win against Frankfurt will be crucial to save Sahin’s job, Hamann said.
“But at the moment I can’t imagine how that would work,” he added.
It will be another away game and Dortmund have won only once in their eight games as guests so far this season.
“They have always said that once the qualification to the Champions League was in danger, then they have to make considerations about the coach. We’re not far away from the point in which they will have to do something,” Hamann said.
He also cast doubt on whether Sahin is the appropriate coach for a top club like Dortmund.
“Borussia Dortmund is not a job to learn. If you want to learn, then you have to go to the second or the third division,” Hamann said.
Sahin, a former Dortmund player replaced Edin Terzic at the start of the season. It’s his first job coaching a professional football team.
