The reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, returned to the Kano Emir’s Palace early Saturday morning, effectively thwarting a federal government plan to smuggle the deposed Emir, Aminu Bayero, into the palace under the cover of darkness.
Heavy security was deployed to the palace in anticipation of Bayero’s return, aiming to ensure his discreet entry. However, sources confirmed that Sanusi II’s unexpected arrival disrupted these plans.
Reports from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport confirmed the landing of Bayero’s plane, indicating a well-orchestrated but ultimately foiled attempt to reinstate the dethroned monarch without public notice.
This high-stakes power struggle follows the signing of the Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment number 2) Law, 2024, on Thursday by the state governor. The amended law dissolved the five emirate councils of Kano, Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya, effectively consolidating the emirate structure in Kano.
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, flanked by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam, Speaker Isma’il Falgore, and SSG Abdullahi Bichi, announced the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II immediately after signing the bill. Sanusi II had been deposed by Ganduje in 2020, a decision that had sparked widespread controversy and unrest.
“The law marks a new chapter for the Kano emirate,” the governor declared, highlighting the significance of the legislative change and the reinstatement of Sanusi II.
The unfolding situation at the Kano Emir’s Palace underscores the intense political dynamics and the high stakes surrounding the leadership of one of Nigeria’s most influential traditional institutions.
