DRC Armed Forces Thwart Attempted Coup Against President Felix Tshisekedi

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) armed forces successfully thwarted an attempted coup against President Felix Tshisekedi on Sunday. The dramatic clash between armed men in military uniforms and the guards of a prominent politician resulted in three fatalities.

Brigadier General Sylvain Ekenge, the army spokesman, confirmed that the coup attempt was immediately foiled and that the situation is now under control. According to a Reuters report, several suspects, including foreign nationals, have been arrested, though it remains unclear whether they have been detained or killed.

This development follows an earlier attack on the home of Vital Kamerhe, a member of parliament expected to be named speaker. The assault led to the deaths of two guards and an assailant, further escalating the tension within the capital.

The United States embassy has issued a security alert, cautioning about ongoing activity by DRC security forces and reports of gunfire in the area. This alert underscores the volatility of the current situation and advises American citizens to exercise caution.

The attempted coup comes on the heels of President Tshisekedi’s meeting with parliamentarians and leaders of the Sacred Union of the Nation ruling coalition on Friday. The meeting aimed to address the ongoing crisis within his party. President Tshisekedi warned that he might dissolve the National Assembly and call for new elections if internal disputes persist.

President Tshisekedi, who was re-elected in December in a contentious election marked by allegations of irregularities, has been grappling with maintaining party unity and political stability. This latest incident highlights the significant challenges facing his administration as it strives to consolidate power and ensure national security.
