RABAT, Morocco — Nigeria’s Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing 4–3 on penalties to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Sunday’s African playoff final.
The match ended 1–1 after extra time. Frank Onyeka gave Nigeria a bright start with a third-minute strike, but Mechak Elia pulled DR Congo level in the 32nd minute.
Nigeria’s troubles deepened when star forward Victor Osimhen was forced off with an injury just before halftime, dealing a major blow to the team’s attacking rhythm.
In the deciding shootout, Nigeria faltered as Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon and Semi Ajayi missed their spot kicks. DR Congo held firm, with captain Chancel Mbemba scoring the winner to send his country to the 2026 World Cup.
The defeat means Nigeria has now missed back-to-back World Cups for the first time since making its debut appearance in 1994.
