ÄMARI, Estonia — The Royal Netherlands Air Force has deployed its F-35 fighter jets to Ämari Air Base, Estonia, marking a historic milestone for NATO air operations. These advanced fifth-generation jets are the first NATO aircraft to use Ämari’s newly renovated runway, underscoring the alliance’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and strengthening collective defence.
“This deployment demonstrates how Allies are investing in cutting-edge technology and capabilities to stand against current and future threats,” said Lieutenant General Thorsten Poschwatta, Commander of NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre.
“Very fittingly, the first NATO jets to use this newly renovated runway are fifth-generation fighter aircraft.”
The €18.5 million runway renovation, supported by Luxembourg and NATO, reflects Estonia’s dedication to bolstering NATO’s deterrence and defence efforts. With the upgraded airfield now operational, Estonia resumes its role as a key hub for NATO’s 24/7 Air Policing flights, a mission vital to safeguarding the Baltic airspace.
“We are delighted to host the Netherlands as the first nation to take over air policing at the renovated Ämari Air Base,” said Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur.
“With the improved conditions and a new runway, air policing can now proceed with F-35s, the most advanced fighter jets in the world.”
The Dutch detachment was welcomed during a ceremony attended by senior NATO and Estonian officials. Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Smaal, Commander of the Dutch detachment, emphasized the mission’s importance.
“We are ready to operate our fifth-generation fighter jets from Ämari Air Base to provide 24/7 air surveillance and defend ourselves and our Allies,” he said.
This deployment highlights the Netherlands’ ongoing contributions to NATO security. In 2023, Dutch F-35s also supported air policing in Poland. The Netherlands remains one of the Allies utilizing F-35s exclusively for air policing, leveraging their advanced capabilities to enhance regional security.
The Ämari deployment, alongside Italian and French fighter jets stationed in the region, underscores NATO’s readiness and unity. The combined force serves as a strong signal of Allied commitment to preserving territorial integrity and deterring potential adversaries.
