Ebonyi Governor Issues 72-Hour Ultimatum to Striking Workers

ABAKALIKI, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has given state workers 72 hours to resume work or face dismissal, following a warning strike by the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Addressing reporters Monday at the Government House in Abakaliki, Nwifuru said the strike, which began Sunday over the non-implementation of a new minimum wage, is unjustified, claiming his administration owes no worker.

“I am not owing you. If you don’t go to work within 72 hours, consider yourself sacked,” Nwifuru said.

“I will replace you immediately. Not only will you lose your job, but you will also forfeit your salary for the days you are absent.”

The governor reiterated that the state government has approved and begun paying a minimum wage of 75,000 naira. He directed commissioners and department heads to enforce compliance by monitoring attendance and implementing table payments based on the number of days workers are present.

“All agencies and departments must record attendance. Salaries will be paid only to those who report to work. If you don’t want to work, you can forget about the state government,” Nwifuru added.

The NLC initiated the strike over concerns that the agreed minimum wage had not been fully implemented. However, Nwifuru maintained that the state was meeting its obligations in line with the law and agreements.
