Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed fresh charges against Godwin Emefiele, former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The anti-graft agency accused Emefiele of unlawfully acquiring a massive housing estate and controlling billions of naira through proxy accounts.
In a new charge sheet marked CR/350/25 and dated May 30, 2025, the EFCC alleges that Emefiele and a fugitive named Eric Ocheme, acquired a 753-unit housing estate situated on Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja, covering an area of 150,462.86 square metres.
According to the commission, the estate was initially recovered from a former senior government official and was later forfeited to the federal government following a court order from the FCT High Court in Apo.
The motion challenging the forfeiture by Emefiele through his lawyer, A.M. Kotoye (SAN) was dismissed and was taken the matter to the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
The federal government has taken possession of the estate and plans to sell it to Nigerians in the low- and middle-income brackets.
However, Emefiele has filed a notice of injunction to halt further action pending the outcome of his appeal.
