Elemelu Says Politicians Plotting Smear Campaign Against Him

ABUJA, Nigeria (Chatnewstv.com) — The media office of Ndudi Elumelu, the immediate past Minority Leader of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has accused unnamed politicians of plotting to smear his reputation through “malicious media campaigns.”

In a statement released Tuesday, Elumelu’s office cited a fake Facebook post falsely attributed to news outlet Dailyreport.ng that claimed he made remarks about political parties at a rally in Asaba, Delta State.

“The mischievous post was a cheap mischief and a malicious misrepresentation,” the statement said. “For the avoidance of doubt, the immediate past Minority Leader had not attended any political rally in recent time, and there was no political rally in Asaba on the said date.”

The office alleged that those behind the post were “cowardly political elements” worried about Elumelu’s “soaring popularity.” It warned that legal action would be taken if the smear efforts continued.

“While the immediate past Minority Leader has forgiven those behind this mischief, this office will not hesitate to take very strong legal and professional actions should such individuals fail to retrace their steps,” the statement read.

Elumelu, who represented Aniocha/Oshimili constituency in Delta State, served as Minority Leader in the 9th National Assembly from 2019 to 2023.
