The Enugu State Government has issued a stern warning against the leasing of equipment for illegal purposes.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the government urged individuals and companies in the equipment leasing business to perform thorough checks before renting out their equipment for unlawful activities.
The government emphasized that it will take swift action to seize and auction any equipment found to be leased for illegal activities that could harm government assets or interests in sectors such as construction, mining, and agriculture.
The statement also urged leasing companies to diligently verify the background of both the entities and the intended use of the equipment before finalizing any leasing agreements.
“Companies or individuals involved in equipment leasing have a duty to consult relevant government agencies and conduct background checks to verify the legitimacy and authorization of anyone or any company intending to undertake construction, agricultural, mining, or other activities that could affect government property or interests,” the statement advised.
“Neglecting to perform due diligence before leasing out equipment, which is then used for unlawful activities, will lead to serious consequences, including the confiscation and auctioning of vehicles, equipment, and other assets,” the statement continued.
It’s worth noting that the state government has previously expressed concerns about the unauthorized activities of certain individuals in the state, highlighting the environmental and climate-related impacts of such actions.
