TALLINN, Estonia (Chatnewstv.com) — Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said Thursday that Estonia and Germany will continue pressing Russia with sanctions and military aid to Ukraine, warning that Moscow’s ongoing attacks show it has not abandoned its aims of destroying Ukraine.
“Unfortunately, Russia’s ongoing attacks against Ukraine prove that it has not abandoned its goal of destroying Ukraine and rearranging the security order in Europe to suit its own interests,” Tsahkna said after meeting German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in Tallinn. “This means one thing only – supporters of Ukraine must continue everything that has already been done. Above all, this means strong military support for Ukraine and economic pressure on Russia.”
Tsahkna urged swift agreement on the European Union’s 19th sanctions package and the use of frozen Russian assets to support Kyiv. He also stressed that Russia “remains the most serious and long-term security threat to the entire NATO alliance.”
The Estonian minister praised Germany’s decisions to boost defense investments and its role in Baltic security through NATO missions.
“Through participation in the air policing mission in Ämari and troops stationed in Lithuania, Germany directly secures peace and security in our region,” Tsahkna said.
Wadephul, who also met President Alar Karis and addressed Estonia’s ambassadors’ conference, reiterated Germany’s support for Ukraine and NATO’s deterrence posture in Eastern Europe.
“Close transatlantic cooperation and strengthening Europe’s deterrence and defense posture are essential,” Tsahkna said. “Germany has recently made principled decisions to increase defense investments, which strengthen not only Germany’s security but that of the entire NATO.”
