BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — The European Union on Thursday approved two new assistance measures worth €60 million to support the modernization of Moldova’s military, including funding for short-range air defense systems, as part of its ongoing aid under the European Peace Facility (EPF).
The seventh assistance measure, adopted by the Council of the EU, allocates €20 million for short-range air defense launchers and missiles for the Moldovan Armed Forces. It follows a €40 million package approved earlier this month aimed at improving infantry mobility and enhancing air defense command and control systems.
“This year, we’re providing €60 million in gear under the European Peace Facility, bringing our total contribution to nearly €200 million since 2021,” said Kaja Kallas, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and President of the Foreign Affairs Council.
The EU has become Moldova’s largest security partner, delivering equipment such as tactical vehicles, protective gear, and mobile ambulances. According to the Council, these efforts are designed to modernize the Moldovan army while respecting the country’s constitutionally enshrined neutrality.
“These are investments in peace and to protect people,” Kallas added.
The latest assistance measures aim to improve Moldova’s defense capabilities, boost operational readiness, and enhance the country’s ability to participate in EU military missions. They also help align Moldova’s military with EU standards and strengthen its resilience against regional threats, particularly those linked to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
The European Peace Facility was established in March 2021 to bolster EU foreign and security policy objectives, including conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and international stability. It allows the EU to finance military and defense-related support for partner countries and regional organizations.
To date, the EU’s total EPF support to Moldova stands at €197 million.
