In a decisive move aimed at addressing Iran’s military support for Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine, the Council of the European Union has expanded the scope of its framework for restrictive measures. The decision, announced today, builds upon the existing framework established in July 2023, which currently restricts the export of components essential for the construction and production of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) from the EU to Iran.
The Council’s latest decision comes in response to Iran’s persistent military backing of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, as well as its support for non-state armed groups in the Middle East and the Red Sea region. The move follows recent Iranian drone and missile attacks against Israel on April 13, 2024, which the EU condemned as an unprecedented escalation and a threat to regional security.
Under the new measures, the EU will now have the authority to target individuals and entities involved in supplying, selling, or transferring both UAVs and missiles to Iran for several specific purposes:
In support of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Used by armed groups and entities to undermine peace and security in the Middle East and the Red Sea region.
In violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216 (2015).
Those targeted will face asset freezes and travel bans to the European Union, with additional prohibitions on the provision of funds or economic resources to listed individuals or entities.
Moreover, the EU will enforce a ban on further exports of components crucial for UAV development and production from the EU to Iran.
“The EU’s decision underscores our commitment to curbing Iran’s destabilizing actions and supporting regional security,” stated a spokesperson for the European Council.
The move aligns with previous calls by the European Council for third parties, including Iran, to cease providing material support to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Additionally, the European Council has strongly condemned Iran’s recent attack on Israel and reaffirmed its solidarity with the Israeli people, emphasizing the EU’s dedication to regional stability and de-escalation efforts.
As tensions continue to simmer in the region, the EU remains resolute in its determination to uphold peace and security, signaling a willingness to take further action if necessary.
“The EU stands ready to implement additional measures to address Iran’s activities, particularly in relation to UAVs and missiles,” affirmed a statement from the European Council, reiterating the bloc’s unwavering commitment to fostering de-escalation and security in the region.
