The European Union has expressed “grave concern” over recent escalations along the Blue Line between Israel and Lebanon, condemning attacks on United Nations peacekeepers in the region. In a statement, the EU specifically criticized the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for strikes on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which resulted in several peacekeepers being wounded.
“These attacks against UN peacekeepers are a grave violation of international law and are totally unacceptable,” the EU said, calling for the attacks to stop immediately.
The EU urged all parties to respect the safety and security of UN personnel and premises. “We urgently await explanations and a thorough investigation from the Israeli authorities,” the statement read, emphasizing UNIFIL’s critical role in maintaining stability in southern Lebanon.
The EU also expressed concern over Hezbollah’s rocket attacks on Israel and the IDF’s strikes in densely populated areas of Lebanon, which have caused civilian casualties and displacement.
“We urge all parties to respect International Humanitarian Law in all circumstances,” the EU said, reiterating its call for an immediate ceasefire and the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Sixteen EU member states currently contribute personnel to UNIFIL. The EU commended their professionalism and reaffirmed its support for the peacekeeping mission.
