BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — The European Commission and the High Representative today condemned what the commission described as “the latest in a series of suspected attacks on critical infrastructure” in the Baltic Sea, pledging stronger measures to safeguard critical infrastructure.
In a joint statement on Thursday, EU leaders praised Finland for swiftly boarding a suspected vessel tied to the incident.
“We stand in full solidarity with Finland, Estonia, and Germany,” the statement read, adding, “We strongly condemn any deliberate destruction of Europe’s critical infrastructure.”
The cables, including the EstLink 2 power line, are suspected to have been damaged by a ship identified as part of Russia’s shadow fleet. “This fleet threatens security and the environment while funding Russia’s war budget,” the statement said.
The EU pledged to propose additional sanctions targeting the shadow fleet and announced plans to bolster undersea cable security. Efforts include enhanced information sharing, advanced detection technologies, improved repair capabilities, and expanded international cooperation.
Despite the damage, the EU confirmed there is no immediate threat to electricity supply in the Baltic region.
The incident, part of a series of suspected attacks on infrastructure, has heightened tensions and underscored the importance of protecting Europe’s energy networks amid geopolitical challenges.
