EU Condemns Dissolution of Thailand’s Move Forward Party, Calls for Political Pluralism

In a stern response to the recent dissolution of Thailand’s Move Forward Party, the European Union has expressed grave concerns over the implications for political pluralism in the country.

In a press statement released by Nabila Massrali, spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy of the EU, the block condemned the decision by Thailand’s Constitutional Court to disband the major political party.

“The decision by the Constitutional Court of Thailand to dissolve another major political party, the Move Forward Party, is a setback for political pluralism in Thailand,” Massrali stated. The Move Forward Party had garnered significant support in the May 2023 general elections, securing over 14 million votes out of a total of 39 million, making it the leading party in the elections.

Massrali emphasized the essential role of multiple political parties in a functioning democracy. “No democratic system can function without a plurality of parties and candidates,” she said. She underscored that any restrictions on free association and expression, especially regarding the activities and formation of political parties, must adhere to international standards, including those set forth in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Highlighting the need for parliamentary integrity, Massrali added, “It is important that the authorities ensure that all legitimately elected Members of Parliament are able to continue fulfilling their parliamentary mandates, irrespective of the party from which they were elected.”

The EU has reiterated its commitment to supporting democratic principles in Thailand. “The European Union stands ready to broaden its engagement with Thailand under the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement signed on 14 December 2022, including on issues of democratic pluralism, fundamental freedoms, and human rights,” Massrali concluded.

This dissolution marks another chapter in Thailand’s turbulent political landscape, raising questions about the future of democratic governance and the protection of political freedoms in the country. The EU’s strong response highlights the international community’s ongoing concern and its readiness to support Thailand in upholding democratic values.
