BRUSSELS (ChatnewsTV) — The European Union on Thursday voiced deep concern over reports that North Korea is sending troops to support Russia in its ongoing war against Ukraine, calling it a “serious breach of international law” and a threat to global peace and security.
In a press release, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy condemned North Korea’s reported involvement in Russia’s conflict, which the EU has long denounced as illegal.
“This would constitute a unilateral hostile act by the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] with serious consequences for European and global peace and security,” the statement read, adding that the move violates fundamental principles of the UN Charter.
The EU’s condemnation extended to what it described as “deepening military cooperation” between Moscow and Pyongyang. The bloc urged North Korea to cease its reported support of Russia’s war effort, which it argued violates multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions.
“Russia’s deepening military cooperation with the DPRK sends a clear message: despite its stated readiness to negotiate, Russia is not sincerely interested in a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace,” the EU added.
The EU further highlighted Russia’s shift in position on North Korean denuclearization, citing recent statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The press release accused Russia of reneging on its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and undermining international efforts to curb nuclear proliferation.
“By doing so, Russia compromises its responsibilities as a permanent member of the Security Council and as a UN member state,” the statement emphasized.
The European Union also underscored the global ramifications of North Korea’s alleged support for Russia, noting the implications for security in the Indo-Pacific region.
The EU stated that it would work with international partners to coordinate a response to this latest development.
