BRUSSELS (ChatnewsTV) — The European Union has issued a forceful condemnation of Iran following the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, a German-Iranian national, describing the event as a “serious blow” to relations between the EU and Iran. In a statement on Tuesday, the EU’s High Representative conveyed condolences to Sharmahd’s family and expressed solidarity with Germany, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
“The European Union condemns in the strongest terms the execution in Iran of German-Iranian national Jamshid Sharmahd,” the statement read, highlighting the union’s disapproval of the “inhumane conditions” and “lack of a fair trial” that Sharmahd reportedly endured. Sharmahd, who was abducted and detained in Iran for years, faced substantial international advocacy for his release, with critics repeatedly denouncing his detention and trial process.
The EU urged Iran to end what it described as the “distressing practice” of detaining foreign civilians and dual nationals, which it believes is often done for political leverage. The statement continued, “Iranian restrictions on consular access to our citizens, the denial of consular protection, and fair trial are not acceptable and stand in direct violation of international law.”
The High Representative further reinforced the EU’s staunch opposition to capital punishment, labeling it an “ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment” and reiterating that “the death penalty violates the inalienable right to life enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”
The EU’s response warned of possible “targeted and significant measures” against Iran, as the bloc seeks to address both the escalating rate of executions within Iran and the country’s treatment of dual nationals. “In view of this appalling development, the European Union will now consider targeted and significant measures,” the statement concluded, underscoring the seriousness of this latest rift in EU-Iran relations.
