BRUSSELS (Chatnewstv.com) — The European Union on Tuesday condemned the detention of at least 11 United Nations personnel by Houthi rebels in Yemen, calling the move a violation of international law.
The EU said it backed UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ statement a day earlier and accused the Houthis of seizing UN property and attempting to break into UN premises in the capital, Sana’a.
“The European Union strongly condemns the additional arbitrary detentions of at least 11 UN personnel by the Houthis in Yemen, as well as the seizure of UN property and attempts to enter the UN premises in Sana’a in violation of international law and the Vienna Conventions, providing for the inviolability of diplomatic premises at all times,” the bloc’s spokesperson said in a statement.
The EU called for “the immediate release of all detained personnel” and reiterated demands that Houthi forces respect international obligations.
It also renewed warnings over maritime security in the Red Sea, urging the Houthis to halt “all threats and attacks against commercial vessels.”
