BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — The European Union on Friday extended sanctions against nearly 2,400 Russian individuals and entities for another six months, maintaining pressure on Moscow over its ongoing war in Ukraine.
The restrictive measures, set to remain in place until September 15, 2025, include asset freezes, travel bans, and prohibitions on providing financial resources to those accused of undermining Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The sanctions, first imposed in 2014 and significantly expanded after Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, aim to weaken the Kremlin’s ability to finance its military operations.
“The EU remains resolute in its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence,” the European Council said in a statement, reiterating that Russia “must not prevail.”
As part of the latest review, the Council opted to remove three deceased individuals from the list and not to renew sanctions against four others. However, the majority of restrictions remain intact as the EU continues its efforts to curb Russia’s war economy.
Since the February 2022 invasion, Brussels has imposed sweeping sanctions targeting Russia’s financial, energy, and defense sectors. The measures aim to deprive Moscow of critical technology and revenue while reinforcing diplomatic, humanitarian, and military aid to Kyiv.
The European Council, in its December 2024 conclusions, reaffirmed its commitment to backing Ukraine “for as long as it takes and as intensely as needed.” The bloc also stressed that any negotiations regarding Ukraine’s future must be undertaken with Kyiv’s full participation.
EU officials have signaled that additional sanctions remain on the table as the war drags on.
