BRUSSELS (ChatnewsTV) — On the anniversary of the death of Jina Mahsa Amini, the European Union issued a strong statement honoring her memory and the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement that emerged following her death. The movement, driven by the courage of countless Iranians, particularly women, began two years ago as citizens took to the streets demanding respect for fundamental freedoms.
“The voices calling for dignity and equality must still be heard and respected,” the EU’s High Representative said in the statement, condemning the continued suppression of women’s rights in Iran. The crackdown by Iranian authorities has led to hundreds of deaths and thousands of unjust detentions, further stifling freedom of expression and assembly across the country.
The EU expressed its firm opposition to the use of capital punishment, particularly in light of the increasing number of executions in Iran in recent years. “We reiterate our unequivocal opposition to the death penalty at all times, in all places, and under all circumstances,” the statement read, while also emphasizing that international law prohibits torture in all cases.
Calling for an end to systemic discrimination, the EU urged Iran to eliminate all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination against women and girls, both in public and private life. The statement stressed that fundamental rights, such as freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, must be upheld at all times, and a free civil society is crucial for progress.
“The EU believes in and speaks up for these fundamental rights, both online and offline,” the High Representative said.
The EU also called on Iran to implement international treaties and agreements, and to grant access to UN Human Rights Council mandate holders and the independent Fact-Finding Mission investigating human rights violations in the country. “The perpetrators of violence and human rights violations must be held accountable,” the statement urged.
In addition, the EU condemned Iran’s practice of arbitrarily detaining EU citizens and dual nationals, demanding their immediate release. The statement concluded with a call for Iranian authorities to respect the rights of their citizens and allow for peaceful protest, ensuring that fundamental freedoms are granted to all.
“We continue to stand by the people of Iran in their struggle for dignity and freedom,” the EU reiterated, underscoring the global commitment to holding Iran accountable for its actions.
