BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — European Union leaders on Thursday called for a stronger, more self-reliant Europe in defense, pledging increased military spending, industrial investments, and security cooperation in response to growing threats from Russia’s war on Ukraine.
“Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security,” the European Council said in a statement, emphasizing the need for faster defense production, reduced reliance on external suppliers, and increased strategic autonomy.
Boosting Defense Spending and Industry
The EU plans to substantially increase defense expenditures, welcoming a proposal for a €150 billion loan package backed by the EU budget to help member states ramp up military investments.
Leaders also urged the European Investment Bank (EIB) to expand its support for the defense industry, including re-evaluating restrictions on funding military-related activities. The Council stressed the need for mobilizing private financing for defense production, signaling to investors that Europe’s security industry is a key priority.
Military Priorities and NATO Coordination
The EU identified air and missile defense, artillery, drones, cyber warfare, artificial intelligence, and strategic enablers as top priorities for defense modernization. The plan also includes enhanced border security, particularly along the eastern flank, where Russia and Belarus pose a growing threat.
The Council reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to NATO, calling for coordination ahead of the alliance’s June 2025 summit. “A stronger EU in security and defense will complement NATO,” the statement read.
Cutting Red Tape, Strengthening Innovation
Leaders called for simplifying procurement rules and reducing bureaucratic hurdles to speed up military production. They urged swift action on the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP) and greater investment in research and innovation through the European Defence Fund.
The EU will continue discussions on its defense strategy at summits in March and June, with expectations of a White Paper on European Defense to outline long-term funding and policy direction.
