BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — European leaders will gather for a Special European Council summit on March 6 to discuss European defense and support for Ukraine, European Council President António Costa announced in an invitation to EU heads of state.
Costa, who currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Council, emphasized the need for Europe to become “more sovereign, more capable, and better equipped” to address security challenges. The meeting will build on discussions held at an informal retreat on February 3, with leaders expected to take short-term decisions to strengthen European defense capabilities.
On Ukraine, Costa said there is “new momentum” toward a comprehensive and lasting peace. He stressed the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and exploring ways to contribute to security guarantees that could help ensure stability in the region.
“I have invited President [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy to come to Brussels on the occasion of the meeting of the European Council to discuss with us the latest developments,” Costa said.
The summit will begin with an exchange of views with the President of the European Parliament, followed by a working lunch with Zelenskyy before leaders turn their focus to European defense and Ukraine.
The EU has been a key supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, providing financial aid, military assistance, and sanctions against Moscow. The upcoming discussions will be crucial in shaping the bloc’s next steps as it navigates both its own security concerns and continued support for Kyiv.
