BRUSSELS — The European Union has appointed Peter Sørensen, a seasoned Danish diplomat, as its Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue, the Council announced Monday. Sørensen’s mandate begins Feb. 1 and spans 13 months.
His primary task will be steering the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo, with a focus on implementing the 2023 Agreement on the Path to Normalization and its annex.
“This appointment underscores the EU’s commitment to fostering stability and cooperation in the Western Balkans,” the Council said in a statement.
Sørensen, a former EU ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, brings decades of diplomatic experience, including roles in Skopje and Geneva, where he represented the EU at the United Nations.
The EU currently deploys 11 Special Representatives globally to advance its policies and interests. High Representative Kaja Kallas emphasized their role in promoting reforms, rule of law, and regional stability.
Kosovo’s status remains contested, as the EU reiterated its adherence to UNSCR 1244/1999 and the International Court of Justice’s opinion on Kosovo’s 2008 independence declaration.
