BRUSSELS (Chatnewstv.com) — The European Union, its Member States, and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) have reaffirmed their joint commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter and multilateral cooperation in a joint statement marking United Nations Day, celebrated on October 24.
In a statement issued Friday, the Council of the EU said the two blocs remain “guided by shared values of good governance, protection of human rights, democratic principles, and respect for the rule of law.”
The partners stressed their determination to work together to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and uphold global peace and security.
“We support a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in Ukraine, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Sahel and in other major conflicts around the globe,” the statement read.
The EU and OACPS commended the UN Secretary-General’s UN80 initiative, which aims to make the UN more “effective, cost-efficient and responsive.” However, they expressed concern about increasing threats to multilateralism, violations of the UN Charter, environmental degradation, and rising global inequalities.
Reaffirming their support for the Pact for the Future, the partners described it as a “crucial step towards revitalising the United Nations and reforming the international financial architecture.” They also reiterated the need for continued reforms to ensure that global financial systems are “fit to address challenges like poverty eradication and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.”
The statement pledged cooperation in implementing the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for Small Island Developing States, the Doha Programme of Action for Least Developed Countries, and the Awaza Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries, highlighting the special vulnerabilities faced by these nations.
“We restate our determination to uphold and promote the purposes and universal principles of the UN Charter, including within our institutions and through the political partnership between our 104 countries, representing around 2 billion people and more than half of the UN members,” the statement concluded.
The EU and OACPS said they remain resolved to strengthen their political and economic partnership and to translate shared principles into “coordinated action within UN bodies and other multilateral fora.”
