BRUSSELS, September 13, 2025 (Chatnewstv.com) — The European Union on Saturday condemned Russia’s plans to hold regional and local elections in occupied Crimea, declaring the vote illegal and in violation of international law.
Russian authorities are set to stage elections on September 14 in several regions, including the city of Sevastopol in Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014.
“The EU does not recognise either the so-called ‘elections’ or their results in the occupied territory,” the bloc’s foreign policy spokesperson said.
“This is another violation of international law, including the UN Charter and Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.”
More than a decade after Russia’s invasion and attempted annexation of Crimea, the EU reiterated its position on the peninsula.
“Crimea is Ukraine,” the statement said, citing the UN General Assembly Resolution of March 27, 2014.
“We call on Russia to cease its efforts to undermine Ukraine’s national unity and territorial integrity.”
The European Union added that it “expresses its unwavering support for Ukraine in its efforts to resist Russia’s war of aggression and remains steadfast in its support to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
