BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — The European Union has approved the removal of land border checks between Bulgaria and Romania, marking a significant step in their integration into the Schengen Area. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, travelers between the two countries will experience unrestricted movement, further solidifying their status as full Schengen members.
“This is a historic moment to finally welcome Bulgaria and Romania as full Schengen members,” said Hungarian Minister for Home Affairs Sándor Pintér.
“Lifting checks on persons at the internal land borders with and between those member states has been a top priority for the Hungarian presidency, and today we have made it a reality. This step will benefit not only Bulgarian and Romanian citizens, but also the EU as a whole.”
Gradual Integration
Since joining the EU, Bulgaria and Romania have adhered to several parts of the Schengen framework, including external border controls and police cooperation. The Council’s decision builds on a previous agreement to remove checks at air and sea borders by March 31, 2024.
The Schengen Area, the world’s largest free travel zone, comprises 29 countries and over 420 million people. It allows for border-free movement among most EU nations, as well as non-EU members like Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.
However, not all EU countries participate fully. Border controls with Cyprus remain, and Ireland has opted out of the Schengen framework.
The Council’s move underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen European unity and enhance regional connectivity, benefiting citizens and businesses across the continent.
