BRUSSELS/BEIRUT — The European Union and the United States have congratulated Joseph Aoun on his election as Lebanon’s new president, calling the development a pivotal moment for the country’s future.
“We warmly congratulate Joseph Aoun on his election as President of the Republic of Lebanon,” said the EU in a statement. “This significant step marks a moment of hope and renewal for the Lebanese people.”
The EU commended Lebanon’s parliamentarians for their ability to reach a broad consensus, noting that national unity is vital for overcoming the aftermath of recent conflicts, advancing reconstruction, and achieving political and economic stability.
“A spirit of national unity is crucial to allow the participation of all citizens, across all components of society,” the statement read. “It is essential for the political stabilization and socio-economic recovery of Lebanon.”
The EU reaffirmed its unwavering support for Lebanon and expressed hope for the swift formation of a government with a reform-oriented agenda. This, it stated, would pave the way for renewed international backing and the full relaunch of the EU-Lebanon partnership.
In a separate statement, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken also congratulated Lebanon, calling Aoun’s election a historic opportunity to build peace, stability, and prosperity.
“The election of President Joseph Aoun is a moment of historic opportunity as Lebanon works to implement its commitments under the cessation of hostilities,” Blinken said. “It is also an opportunity to advance critical reforms, restore government functions, and strengthen institutions.”
